The Mechanical Engineering Department at Virginia Tech has an opportunity for a visiting faculty member under an IPA agreement from LaRC. We invite a researcher to work in collaboration with Dr. Charles Reinholtz and Dr. Al Wicks at our research facility at the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research (IALR) at Danville, VA. The position will involve research and teaching in the technology area of unmanned vehicles. Interest and a research record in any applicable field is of interest, including autonomous vehicle software, mechanics, controls and vehicle design. Experience with any unmanned land and air vehicle is of interest, with a special interest in helicopters.

The Institute in Danville has recently opened, and has all-new classroom, laboratory and distance learning facilities. The Mechanical Engineering Department and IALR are conducting research under a DOD contract to develop and evaluate testing methods for unmanned vehicles. The expectation for the position would be to participate in the research activity at IALR in Danville, with cooperation and interface with the program at Virginia Tech. Research, teaching and advising of graduate students would be involved. The candidate will teach one class per semester that will include undergraduate and graduate courses related to unmanned vehicles. Assignment of duties will include classroom teaching, and the supervision of graduate students and research. New laboratory facilities at IALR are available to the IPA visitor, including the use of office, laboratory and computational facilities. The appointment is available immediately, and may be for a period of 1 year, 2 years, or more.

Expectations include the teaching of one assigned course per academic semester, and development of appropriate research projects including the advising of graduate students and scholarly publication. Requirements include a Ph.D. in an appropriate specialty, and a record of research and publication.

The Department will provide the visitor with a furnished apartment in a local complex near the Danville IALR facility.
