Current Research

Mid Infrared DIAL systems can provide vital data needed by atmospheric scientists to understand atmospheric chemistry. The Earth Science Decadal Survey recommended missions, such as ASCENDS and GACM, to measure atmospheric constituents such as CO2, CH4, CO, O3, NO2, SO2, and CH2O.  ASCENDS stands for Active Sensing Of CO2 Emissions Over Nights, Days, and Seasons while GACM stands for Global Atmospheric Composition Mission.  To accurately measure the concentrations of these gasses, especially the gasses with low concentrations, strong absorption features must be accessed.  Each of the above gasses have characteristic mid infrared absorption features by which either column content or range resolved concentrations can be measured.  Because of these characteristic absorption features the mid infrared spectral region, 3.0 to 50.0 μm, is known as the fingerprint region and is an ideal spectral region to make the measurements.  However, as noted by the Decadal Survey, mid infrared solid-state lasers needed for DIAL systems are not available. Current research will involve identification of a good laser material for at least one of the following gas species: CO2, CH4, CO, O3, NO2, SO2, or CH2O, and a measurement of its germane spectroscopic parameters.  This work will involve both theoretical and laboratory based research.
