Current Research

Laminar-to-Turbulent Transition Modeling: Accurate prediction of laminar-to-turbulent transition is a key ingredient to the aerodynamic design and optimization of many aerospace configurations, such as high-lift systems, reentry bodies/vehicles, and hypersonic air-breathing vehicles. The ongoing projects include:

  1. DNS studies of the transition mechanisms for supersonic swept wing boundary layers; and
  2. Characterization of freestream acoustic disturbances in supersonic/hypersonic ground facilities and their effect on boundary layer transition.

Turbulent Flow Control: This study focuses on reducing turbulent drag using riblets, which has been shown to be the most promising way to control turbulent drag. The DNS tools are used to analyze riblet performance in the supersonic regime, and investigate the detailed drag reduction mechanisms, which will in turn help to optimize the design of riblet geometry.
