Subject: "Development of Persistent, Low-Cost Tactical UAVs"
Additional Information: Presentation (PDF)

In stark contrast to the consolidation of the past decades that resulted in just a few companies developing and producing manned aircraft, now over 200 companies are developing UAVs worldwide. NASA has not been so challenged to develop technology transfer strategies for such a diverse multitude of users since the early days of NACA.

A case study will be provided that highlights the development of the Seascan/ScanEagle family of UAVs by Insitu. This background includes information on the following:

1.The first UAV to cross the Atlantic,
2.The smallest UAV with an effective inertially-stabilized turret,
3.The invention of the Skyhook™ recovery system,
4.The record set for the longest endurance flight of an aircraft to take-off and land from ship, and
5.An innovative strategic alliance with Boeing.

The overlay of technology road maps in each discipline, which results in economically defensible niches for a start-up business, is essential to this development. Insights will be shared on starting an aeronautical technology business capable of competing and working with the giants in the aerospace industry. The presentation will conclude with projections of how the evolution of autonomy technology will result in major opportunities for the budding UAV industry in the future, as well as possible roles that NASA might play.

Dr. Sliwa started his career at NASA Langley (1978 to 1989).
