NIA Receives Finalist Nomination for NASA's George M. Low Award
October 2007 - NASA has named NIA as a 2007 Finalist for the George M. Low Award for Quality and Excellence. NIA was nominated for the award by NASA Langley Research Center based on NIA's performance and quality on NASA programs over the last three years. [See NIA News Release 2007-11]


Laurence J. Bement Young Professional Paper Competition: Adam Przekop
May 2007 - Dr. Adam Przekop received First Runner-up for the paper titled, "Nonlinear Reduced Order Random Response Analysis of Structures with Shallow Curvature" by the Hampton Roads Section of AIAA. The paper, co-authored by Dr. Stephen A. Rizzi (Structural Acoustics Branch, NASA LaRC), was published in AIAA Journal, Vol. 44, No. 8, August 2006, pp. 1767-1778.

NIA Scientists Receive Best Mentorship Research Site Award
May 2007 - The New Horizons Governor's School for Science and Technology awarded Dr. Peter Lillehei (NASA LaRC), Dr. Cheol Park and Dr. Jin Ho Kang (NIA) the Best Mentorship Research Site Award for 2006-2007. Two students, Kaleigh Reno (Tabb High School) and Vincent Yannello (Poquoson High School), were mentored at the Advanced Materials and Processing Branch at NASA LaRC.

Walkley Elected to AIAA HRS Council
May 2007 - Bo Walkley, Director of NASA Langley Programs, has been elected to the AIAA Hampton Roads Section Council.

NESC Academy Runner-Up for HR PMI Project of the Year Award
April 2007 - The NESC Academy was awarded first runner-up for the Project of the Year Award presented by the Project Management Institute's (PMI) Hampton Roads Chapter. The award recognizes and honors the accomplishments of the PMI project of the year and the project team involved for superior performance and execution of exemplary project management. Dr. Marcia R. Gibson, NESC Academy Program Director, accepted the award during April's Hampton Roads Chapter meeting.

Luo Appointed Richard F. Barry Distinguished Endowed Professor
April 2007 - Dr. Li-Shi Luo, Old Dominion University faculty-in-residence at NIA, has been appointed as the Richard F. Barry Distinguished Endowed Professor of Mathematics. Dr. Luo's research focues on kinetic theory and nonequilibrium statistical mechanics, Lattice Boltzmann equation and CFD, and complex fluids.

Crespo Named AIAA Hampton Roads Young Engineer of the Year
February 2007 - Dr. Luis G. Crespo has been named the Hampton Roads Section Young Engineer of the Year by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA). Crespo is being recognized as the inaugural recipient of this award, given for significant technical accomplishment made by a young person to the advancement of aeronautics and astronautics. The award will be presented at the AIAA Hampton Roads section annual banquet in May 2007. [See NIA News Release 2007-05]

Stanley Receives AIAA's Regional Engineer of the Year Award
February 2007 - Dr. Douglas O. Stanley has been selected by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) as the Region I Engineer of the Year. As the region’s recipient, he was nominated for the AIAA national Engineer of the Year Award and will be inducted into the Engineer of the Year Society as a 2007 Distinguished Member. Stanley is being recognized as an AIAA member who has made a recent individual contribution in the application of scientific and mathematical principles leading to a significant accomplishment or event worthy of AIAA’s national or international recognition. Region I includes the North East, from Virginia up to Maine. [See NIA News Release 2007-02]

Hubbard Recognized as Associate Fellow of AIAA
January 2007 - Dr. James E. Hubbard, Jr., University of Maryland Langley Professor, has been admitted to the grade of Associate Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) in recognition of his professional standing and successful practice.

NIA 2006 Best Research Publication Award: Amber J. Soja et al.
January 2007 - Dr. Amber J. Soja, Nadezda M. Tchebakova, Nancy H.F. French, Michael D. Flannigan, Herman H. Shugart, Brian J. Stocks, Anatoly I. Sukhinin, E.I. Parfenova, F. Stuart Chapin III and Paul W. Stackhouse, Jr. received NIA's 2006 Best Research Publication award for their paper titled "Climate-Induced Boreal Forest Change: Predictions Versus Current Observations." This paper was published in Global and Planetary Change, 2006.
