Royster Student Scholarship Award: Noah Schiller
11/4/05 - Virginia Tech PhD graduate student, Noah Schiller, received the poster competition award at the regional meeting of the Acoustical Society of America. His poster was titled "Numerical Simulation of an Aircraft Style Panel Excited by a Random Pressure Field." Award winners receive a $2500 scholarship toward school expenses.

NASA Distinguished Public Service Medal: Douglas Stanley
9/21/05 - Dr. Douglas Stanley, Georgia Tech, received the medal in appreciation for outstanding leadership of the Exploration Systems Architecture Study (ESAS), a team which chartered NASA's first steps back to the Moon and on to Mars. According to the NASA Honor Awards website, this medial is the "highest honor NASA awards to anyone who was not a Government employee when the service was performed. The award is granted only to individuals whose distinguished accomplishments contributed substantially to the NASA mission. The contribution must be so extraordinary that other forms of recognition would be inadequate."

NIA-Led Team Wins Three-Year Grant from NASA HQ
8/15/05 - NIA received a three-year grant award from NASA Headquarters for the proposal "Constraints from AURA Observations on the Impact of Convection and Lightning on Upper Tropospheric Chemistry." The proposal was submitted to the Science Mission Directorate’s Earth-Sun System Division (formerly the Office of Earth Science) in responses to NASA Research Announcement (NRA) "Measurements, Modeling, and Analyses in Support of AURA and Other NASA Satellite Observations of the Earth’s Atmosphere."
The proposal is a joint effort between NIA, NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC), and the University of Wisconsin-Madisson (UW). The principal investigator is Dr. Hongyu Liu of NIA. Co-investigators are Dr. James H. Crawford and Dr. R. Bradley Pierce of LaRC, and Professors Matthew H. Hitchman and Gregory J. Tripoli of UW.

NASA Certificate of Recognition: Terry St. Clair
7/29/05 - Presented to Terry St. Clair for the creative development of a technological contribution which has been determined to be of significant value in the advancement of the space and aeronautical activities of NASA and is entitled "A Novel Surface Treatment for Titanium Alloys."

7/05 - Cheol Park received a Space Act Award Certificate from the NASA Inventions and Contributions Board for his recent invention, "A Novel Surface Treatment for Titanium Alloys."

5/24/05 - Adam Przekop received First Runner-up for the paper titled, "Finite Element Multiple-Mode Approach to Nonlinear Free Vibrations of Shallow Shells" by the Hampton Roads Section of AIAA.

4/5/05 - Presented to the Advanced Air Transportation Technologies Project Team in recognition for the highly successful research and technology transfer leading to improved operations of the National Airspace System.

NASA Group Achievement Award: Yonghoon Choi
4/5/05 - Presented to the Intercontinental Chemical Transport Experiment North America Science Team in recognition of outstanding accomplishments with the extremely successful Intercontinental Chemical Transport Experiment conducted in Illinois and New Hampshire.

Space Act Award Certificate: Tian-Bing Xu
3/24/05 - Tian-Bing Xu received a Space Act Award Certificate from the NASA Inventions and Contributions Board for his recent invention, "Hybrid Electromechanical Actuator and Actuation System."

3/05 - Ji Su, Tian-Bing Xu, Gilda Miner, Diane Stoakley, and Mary Carusa received the Best Poster Paper Award for their poster entitled "Photo-Active and Self-Assembled PD Interlayer Polymer Films" presented at the Smart Structures and Materials 2005 meeting, San Diego, CA, March 6-10, 2005.

NESC Honor Awards: Jody Fisher & Kenneth Sutton
2/8/05 - The Independent Technical Assessment Team was honored for their contribution in the modeling of the Cassini-Huygens Probe Entry, Descent, and Landing on Titan. NIA researchers, Jody Fisher and Kenneth Sutton, received the NASA Engineering and Safety Center Group Achievement Award for the coordination of their individual efforts that have contributed substantially to the success of NESC's mission. Other team members include representatives from NASA Langley's NESC, Systems Engineering Directorate (SED), and Research & Technology Directorate (RTD), and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL).
