Research Project: Vision-Based Aircraft Following of an Uncooperative Ground Target
University Advisor: Dr. Ella Atkins, Aerospace Engineering, University of Maryland
NASA Mentor: Mike Logan, Aeronautics Systems Engineering Branch

Research in this project is target primarily towards the development of a vision-based ground target tracking system that is to be (1) flown in an existing UAV airframe, (2) not reliant upon cooperative telemetry/communication from the ground target, and (3) comprised primarily of low-cost commercially available off-the-shelf components. The system implementation is to include (a) the identification of suitable vision hardware, (b) the identification of sensor aiming requirements and the selection or development of suitable hardware to meet those requirements, (c) the identification of a suitable hardware architecture for the data collection, data processing, and communications systems, and (d) the implementation of software to process the video data and command the sensor hardware and host aircraft so as to allow reliable tracking of the ground target.
