The project involves research in the development of nano-composite materials.
It has previously been determined that the single most important aspect relating to the performance of nano-composites is the level of dispersion of the nano-inclusion in the host matrix. A series of nano-composites will be fabricated by systematically varying the compositions and processing conditions. The nano-structure of these samples will then be evaluated for the level of dispersion using the techniques developed at NASA. The functional performance will be evaluated with respect to mechanical, thermal and electrical characteristics. The relationship between the nano-structure and the functional performance will then begin to be modeled. This model will help predict the behavior of nano-composites and will also help guide the design of future nano-composites.
