Research Project: Autonomous Ornithopter Project
University Advisor: Prof. James Hubbard, Aerospace Engineering, University of Maryland

The autonomous ornithopter project is an innovative and challenging project developed to explore the possibilities of small, unmanned, flapping-wing, autonomous vehicle flight. The project can be viewed as having three major parts. These are: the preliminary hardware and software implementation on a fixed wing model aircraft, the transition to the ornithopter platform, and the full, closed-loop, autonomous flapping-wing flight demonstration. Stage one of the autonomous ornithopter project involves hardware implementation on a fixed-wing model aircraft. Stage two of this autonomous ornithopter project will begin with a transition of hardware to the flapping-wing platform. The final stage of the autonomous ornithopter project will transition from a communication-only platform to a fully autonomous platform. This research is partially supported by NIA base funds.
