Research Project: Pressureless Sintering of Titanium Diboride and Alumina - Titanium Diboride Powders

Key parameters for affecting densification of pure TiB2 and composite Al2O3 – TiB2 powders are being determined.  Self propagating high temperature synthesis (SHS) reactions and manual mixing are being used for preparing the starting powders.  The powders are being pressed into pellets and fired between 1800 - 2100°C using a reducing atmosphere.  Preliminary results indicate that sintering of these materials occurs on or about 2000°C.  Attempts to determine if either material may be sintered at lower temperatures will also be studied.  Additionally, results on the amount of densification achieved, as well as, corresponding mechanical properties will be studied.  From the experimental design (Taguchi methods) and data obtained significant factors will be identified that produce high density materials.
