This research involves conducting chemical transport studies of carbon monoxide released from wildfires into the atmosphere. The transport is being modeled using the NOAA National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) Global Forecast System (GFS) model integrating with local ensemble Kalman filter data assimilation. The data assimilation includes incorporation of the NASA Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) CO retrievals. The NCEP GFS model is being modified to incorporate simple atmospheric CO chemistry. The CO transport and assimilation is being validated using best possible data such as from aircraft observations obtained from the NASA and NOAA recent field mission INTEX-NA.
