Research Project: Structures Research in Bonded and Bolted Joint Configurations
University Advisor: Prof. Rakesh Kapania, Aerospace and Ocean Engineering, Va Tech
NASA Mentor: Dr. Stanley Smeltzer, Mechanics of Structures and Materials
The project involves the development of innovative analysis methodologies for determining the deformations and stress response of bonded and bolted joint configurations. Finite-element modeling and nonlinear static and thermal analyses of vehicle joint concepts will be conducted to support the development of next generation launch vehicles. The research will investigate the structural response of bondlines for revolutionary configurations when both thermal and mechanical loading is taken into account in the analysis. The project will also involve the development of novel structural and thermal analysis methods to characterize the behavior of composite tank models.
