Research Project: CEV Abort Scenario Methods and Tools
University Advisor: Prof. Robert Tolson, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, NCSU
NASA Mentor: Mark Schoenenberger, Exploration Systems Engineering Branch (ESEB), Systems Engineering Directorate (SED)
NASA is developing a CEV as the new human space transportation system. To increase mission safety, the CEV will be of capsule shape. Aerodynamic stability of such vehicle is an issue throughout the aerodynamic range. This research will involve a flight experiment to develop methods and tools to analyze such stability during an abort scenario. Flights of a CEV model are expected to take place in an altitude range from 50 to 70 km and off the east coast of the US at a latitude of about 40 degrees. Trajectory and atmospheric reconstruction will be the primary focus of this research.
