Kathryn Logan was named the Virginia Tech Langley Professor in August 2004 and holds a simultaneous faculty position as professor in the Materials Science and Engineering Department at Virginia Tech. Dr. Logan is also Principal Research Engineer Emerita in the School of Materials Science and Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. In prior assignments at Georgia Tech, Dr. Logan was the Special Assistant to the Vice Provost for Research. Her responsibilities included participation in the development of overall direction for campus research. She was instrumental in developing the Georgia Tech Campus Strategic Plan for Materials. While serving as the Director of Research in the School of Materials Science and Engineering, Dr. Logan developed research opportunities for faculty and graduate students. In other assignments, Dr. Logan participated in the Computational Mechanics Center and served as the Interim Assistant Vice President for Interdisciplinary Programs. At the Georgia Tech Research Institute, she served as the Interim Director of the Materials Science and Technology Laboratory, Head of the Ceramics Branch, and Head of the Thermite Processing Group.

Dr. Logan also is presently serving as Past President and Board Director of the American Ceramic Society. She was a member of the National Academy of Science Board on Army Science and Technology (1997-2003) and the Virginia Tech Department of Materials Science and Engineering Advisory Board (2002-2004). She was previously assigned to the Army Corps of Engineers (2000-01) and the Materials Science Division of the Army Research Office (1998-00) as an IPA (Intergovernmental Personnel Act), Program Manager and Materials Engineer Dr. Logan has a number of professional affiliations including: Fellow of the American Ceramic Society, Past President and Fellow of the National Institute of Ceramic Engineers and a member of the (International) Academy of Ceramics. She is listed in the 2004 edition of Marquis Who’s Who in the World.

Dr. Kathryn Logan received her Bachelor in Ceramic Engineering, MS in Ceramic Engineering and PhD in Civil Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology. She is a licensed Professional Engineer. Dr. Logan’s research focuses on advanced synthesis, processing and dynamic behavior of high performance materials. Eighteen patents have been issued on the technology worldwide.
