An Introduction to Uncertainty Based Methods
Luis Crespo, NIA

The objective of Uncertainty Based Methods (UBM) is to increase the confidence and consistency in the analysis and design of systems subject to uncertainty.

UBM provides a systematic approach to the characterization, propagation, decomposition and accommodation of uncertainty in aerospace solutions. Since the UBM's framework is discipline independent, it is specially suited for applications in multi-disciplinary environments where variable fidelity models coexist.

This talk presents a self-contained overview on the subject for the non-expert. Basic concepts and UBM capabilities are emphasized and exemplified by using problems with different levels of complexity. Applications to aircraft conceptual design, structures, optimization and controls are presented.
