FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

U.S. Citizenship:
All LARSS participants must be U.S. Citizens. Therefore, permanent residents and holders of visas or green cards are not eligible for the program. Dual citizens will need to indicate what other country they are a citizen of and possibly respond to additional security requirements.

"The information below is a sample of what is actually included as a part of the application."
Transportation and Housing:

Transportation: Please note that selected students are very strongly encouraged to bring their own vehicles.
This provides more flexibility with regard to housing options as well as traveling locally while in the LARSS Program.

Housing: Housing arrangements and expenses are the sole responsibility of the student participants, including leases, rent payments, deposits, etc.  Rent payments are made out of the stipend provided.

Students always have the option of finding suitable housing on their own.  Please note that short-term leases are very expensive.

In an effort to help defray the cost of housing and assist in locating an appropriate housing option, the LARSS program staff will provide housing assistance by assigning roommates and providing suggested housing options where housing expenses may be shared if requested to do so.

Typically four students are assigned per 2-bedroom apartment.   The apartments are coordinated through an apartment management organization.   That means each student will share a bedroom with one other student, and the four will share the full apartment.  The apartments are fully furnished, including utilities, internet, dishes, linens, etc.  The 2010 cost utilizing an apartment management organization has not yet been determined.  As a point of reference, the 2009 interns paid $1,860 per person for the summer.  The 2010 rate will most likely be comparable.

If selected, students may opt for one of three housing options:

[ ]  I will find suitable housing on my own.

[ ]  I would like to be included in the program housing option with assigned roommates and apartment determined through the selected apartment management organization.

[ ]  I would like to be assigned roommates who are interested in finding housing on our own as a group, not utilizing the apartment management organization.

Note:  If housing assistance is requested, please note that changing plans affects other assigned roommates as well.  The housing assistance provided by program staff is limited and subject to change.  If selected, we will ask that you confirm your desire for housing assistance on your acceptance form prior to assigning roommates.
