Bernard M. Grossman, Ph.D.
Dr. Bernard Grossman comes to NIA from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, where he was a Professor and Department Head of Aerospace and Ocean Engineering. He also served as the Director of the Multidisciplinary Analysis and Design (MAD) Center for Advanced Vehicles. He is currently on leave from his faculty position at Virginia Tech.
He obtained his B.S. (‘64) in Aerospace Engineering and his M.S. (‘65) and Ph.D. (‘69) in Astronautics from the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn.
From 1968 to 1980 he was in the Research Department at Grumman Aerospace Corporation, where he held the position of Head of the Theoretical Aerodynamics Laboratory. He was an Associate Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the Polytechnic Institute of New York from 1980-1982. Since January 1982 he has been at Virginia Tech as a full professor and served as Department Head of Aerospace and Ocean Engineering from 1993 to 2002. From August through November 2002 he was on assignment to NASA Langley Research Center in the Advanced Vehicle Systems Technology Office, where he is involved in planning future research directions in aerodynamics and CFD as applied to the design of advanced aeronautical concepts.
His research interests include computational fluid dynamics and multidisciplinary design optimization, and has published more than 250 technical papers. He has taught courses in computational fluid dynamics, numerical analysis and various topics in fluid mechanics and gasdynamics. In addition, he has been a visiting scientist at the Institute for Computer Applications in Science and Engineering, and in 1990 was a NATO Senior Fellow at the Politecnico di Bari in Bari, Italy. He has given short courses in CFD and gasdynamics in the U.S. and Europe.
He is a Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, where he has served as an Associate Editor of the AIAA Journal, a member of the Fluid Dynamics and Multidisciplinary Design Optimization Technical Committees and was the Technical Chair of the 12th AIAA Computational Fluid Dynamics Conference.
