Subject:* "Bear Bones Versus Ferrous Wheels: When Should We Copy Nature's Mechanical Devices?"

On close examination nature's designs turn out to be a distinctly mixed bag-sometimes superior to our own, but all too often severely constrained and lacking some of our most useful devices. Copying, common claims to the contrary, has only occasionally proven productive in the past. Yet, paradoxically, recent work in biomechanics points up some general approaches to mechanical design from which we can learn as well as a variety of schemes that might bear more specific emulation.
