Langley Professor Receives US Patent |
 |
Dr. James Hubbard, Langley Professor from the University of Maryland, was awarded U.S. Patent 6,840,117,B2 entitled "Patient Monitoring System Employing Array of Force Sensors on a Bedsheet or Smaller Substrate." This system monitors patient activity in a hospital bed or wheelchair, by using a sensing sheet or pad made of Smart Materials to process information about patient motion. The information is logged and transmitted to the appropriate caregiver. This technology can also be used to measure lift and drag on a wing, and therefore is able to look at flow separation, boundary layer transition, and all of the pressure moments associated with the flow. Such sensors will ultimately be used to morph-control the wing load distribution so as to minimize drag and increase vehicle range and endurance as part of Dr. Hubbard's research program, Morpheus.
