The outreach program at NIA is intended to aid in the development of a well-educated workforce in science and engineering for NIA, NASA and the nation. The focus of this program is to help ensure that the best and brightest students maintain an interest in science and technology. We must make certain that this future talent draws from the largest possible pool of future students and must include under-represented minorities. A substantial part of the NIA outreach program is dedicated to teacher training and enhancement activities that will keep middle and high school students interested in science and technology.

NIA is partnering with NortelLearniT to developand implement a pioneering approachto preparing our nation’s educators for a 21st century approach to teaching Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). By focusing on the Six Principles of 21st Century eTeaching implemented in our lesson plans, NIA and Nortel LearniT train teachers on how to use an experiential approach to inquiry-based teaching. Coupling NIA expertise in science, engineering and mathematics with Nortel LearniT’s technology integration resources creates a powerful environment for teachers to build their 21st century teaching skills.
Master the Science
Nintendo of America, Inc., the National Institute of Aerospace (NIA), and Nortel LearniT have teamed to develop an in-school program that incorporates science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) themes into activity units for elementary and middle school students.
NASA 360 Program (.mov)
NASA 360 is a 30-minute pilot program developed for television broadcast and funded by the Langley Public Affairs Office. The task was to develop a pilot program on the subject of NASA's Vision for Space Exploration. The target audience is 18-34 year olds, both male and female. This pilot was developed in a format this is transferable to Beta, VHS, DVD, Internet (web streaming and downloads), Audio (podcasting), downlinking via satellite (TV station use), and printing (printed materials).
The Center for Advancement of STEM Education (CASE), NIA and Nortel LearniT have partnered
to prepare a cross-section of America's top K-12 educators to become 21st Century eTeachersTM of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Throughout the summer of 2007, CASE hosted five one-week workshops designed to help in-service teachers from 11 states adapt new ways of teaching STEM - ways that are more engaging and successful for learners.
A Greenland blog chronicles the six-day symposium. This website captures images of travels to the ice cap and Kellyville radar facility. Video clips of interviews with scientists, professors, and students attending GSSS are also found at this site.
