Pre-Service Teacher Program |
 |
This program seeks to improve the pre-service teacher preparation programs in science and mathematics at minority serving institutions, particularly Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs), Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs) and selected majority institutions. The means to accomplish this includes professional development, external partnerships and systemic reform. The program supports elementary and middle school pre-service teachers from underserved populations and will provide opportunities for pre-service teachers to develop their confidence and skills to effectively teach mathematics and science using technology.
Two vehicles which NASA has had success in accomplishing these goals include a National Conference and a Summer Institute. The intent of the Conference is to engage pre-service teachers and their faculty advisors (from selected HBCU, HIS, TCU and other minority serving institutions) in an intensive two and one-half day training session in mathematics, science, and technology enhancement as well as National Education Goals, systemic reform issues and emerging mathematics and science standards.
This ongoing program has been funded by NASA for more than 10 years and is currently funded through the NIA Cooperative Agreement as of June 2005. NIA manages the program, with Dr. Paula Tucker-Hogan serving as the Program Director. Much of the conference and institute programs are being subcontracted through University of Maryland – Eastern Shore and Bennett College. Additional information may be found on the NASA Pre-Service Teacher Program website.
