Strategic Relationship with Airbus North America
NIA News Release 2007-04
February 26, 2007

(HAMPTON, Va) – The National Institute of Aerospace (NIA) and Airbus North America announced today the award of the first program under a six-year framework agreement to conduct research intended to lead to new technologies in support of future commercial aircraft. This and subsequent programs will be fully funded by Airbus. The research will be conducted by NIA, academic faculty at its member universities and at universities around the country.

“Civil aeronautics is a global business,” stated David J. Peake, NIA’s Vice President of Research and Program Development. “This is an opportunity for NIA and our member universities to enhance our position in the global aeronautics community to address the need for future technologies to enable super-efficient aircraft and quiet flight.”

This strategic relationship strengthens NIA’s vision to be a provider of choice to the global aerospace research and technology community by combining the resources of academic faculty and NIA researchers as well as other universities, both national and international. It contributes to Airbus’s plans to create a network of universities around the world to support future projects.

“Airbus has always tapped great minds around the world in the development of new technologies,” said Allan McArtor, Chairman, Airbus North America. “To partner with such a highly respected American organization as NIA and its network of leading U.S. universities will allow two enterprising teams to work together in optimizing the efficiency of today’s and tomorrow’s commercial aircraft.”

NIA is a non-profit research and graduate education institute formed by a consortium of research universities to ensure a national capability to support NASA’s mission by expanding collaboration with academia and leveraging expertise inside and outside NASA. NIA performs research in a broad range of disciplines including space exploration, systems engineering, nanoscale materials science, flight systems, aerodynamics, air traffic management, aviation safety, planetary and space science, and global climate change. The institute’s graduate program offers M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in the fields of engineering and science through its university partners: Georgia Tech, Hampton University, North Carolina A&T State University, North Carolina State University, the University of Maryland, the University of Virginia, Virginia Tech, Old Dominion University, and the College of William & Mary.
