NIA Supports the US Dept of Commerce's Americas Competitiveness Forum |

HAMPTON, Va. – The National Institute of Aerospace (NIA), in collaboration with its partner, Nortel LearniT, will provide education and outreach support for the upcoming Americas Competitiveness Forum (ACF) June 10-12, 2007 in Atlanta, Ga.
Following the Forum, NIA and its partners will provide online professional development for educators to support the U.S. Department of Commerce’s education and workforce development efforts. “This collaborative effort,” stated Dr. Robert E. Lindberg, NIA President and Executive Director, “embraces ACF’s model for government, private sector and academia to work together to address the need for educator professional development and inquiry-based science, technology, engineering and mathematics resources that will enhance student learning in a 21st Century classroom.”
The ACF is being hosted by U.S. Secretary of Commerce Carlos Gutierrez to provide a venue for government ministers from the Western Hemisphere to come together with leaders from the private sector, academia and non-governmental organizations to explore cutting-edge ideas and best practices in several key areas of competitiveness. Focus will be on sparking and sustaining innovation, creating solutions in education and workforce development, designing successful global supply chain strategies and fostering small business development and growth.
Lindberg will moderate the plenary session: Interactive Video Conference; NASA Space Program, Digital Learning Network on June 10th from 10:30-11:00am. The event is a collaborative effort with NASA Johnson Space Center and students from Bolivia and Atlanta, Ga. NIA is a non-profit research and graduate education institute headquartered in Hampton, Va. It was formed by a consortium of research universities to ensure a national capability to support NASA’s mission by expanding collaboration with academia and leveraging expertise inside and outside NASA. NIA performs research in a broad range of disciplines including space exploration, systems engineering, nanoscale materials science, flight systems, aerodynamics, air traffic management, aviation safety, planetary and space science, and global climate change. The institute’s graduate program offers M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in the fields of engineering and science through its university partners: Georgia Tech, Hampton University, North Carolina A&T State University, North Carolina State University, the University of Maryland, the University of Virginia, Virginia Tech, Old Dominion University, and the College of William & Mary.
