Engineering and Management Lessons Learned from Viking
Angelo (Gus) Guastaferro, NASA, ret.
In this lecture, Mr. Guastaferro will review the technical, scientific and management challenges of the Viking Project. In addition to providing the details of the design, development and flight of that mission, he will explore the missions prior to and after Viking. He will conclude his presentation with a short review of the lessons he learned from Viking as he applied them in his other assignments over the past fifty years.
Mr. Guastaferro has over 50 years of experience in Project Management and Systems Engineering within NASA, DoD, and industry. He has occupied a variety of positions from Flight Test Engineer to Aerospace Industry Executive. Mr. Guastaferro’s most formative Project Management experience was as a senior member of the Viking project from 1968 to 1976. He served in a variety of engineering and management roles during Viking development at NASA Langley and completed the project as Deputy Project Manager. After the successful Viking mission, he served as a senior executive at NASA as the Director of Planetary Programs at NASA Headquarters and Deputy Director of the NASA Ames Research Center. After his career in NASA, he served as the senior executive for civil space spacecraft design and development activities for twelve years at Lockheed Martin Missiles and Space Company. Projects under his supervision included the Hubble Space Telescope, International Space Station, and Gravity Probe B. As a consultant to NASA, Mr. Guastaferro is currently training a new generation of project managers and systems engineers by serving a Project Manager for development of the APPEL curriculum for the Office of Chief Engineer at NASA HQ.
