Returning Humans to the Moon:
What Do We Do After We Replant the Flag?

James W. Head, Brown University

The Moon is a fundamental cornerstone in understanding the Earth and other terrestrial planetary bodies. Apollo surface expeditions showed that significant scientific exploration can be undertaken and accomplished by humans. The Soviet Union showed that the automated rovers and sample return missions can obtain fundamental scientific results. What should humans do when they return to the Moon? What should be the balance between human and automated exploration capabilities? These questions will be addressed in the context of geological exploration of the Earth and planets.
