Four Decades of Aerospace Systems Analysis at Langley Alan W. Wilhite, Georgia Tech
From Apollo to the current Space Exploration Program, NASA Langley has been a key contributor to determining the future of our Nation’s aerospace program. Dr. Wilhite will discuss this history and his personal involvement in the progression of systems analysis, the development of computers and methods and highlights of critical studies and assessments including Apollo, Space Shuttle, Continental/Semi Global Transport, Advanced Manned Launch System, National AeroSpace Plane, Space Defense Initiative, Assured Crew Return Capability, SuperSonic Transport/High-Speed Civil Transport, Second and Third Generation Launch Systems, Orbital Space Plane, and the current Space Exploration Systems Architecture. From “computers” to slide rules to central computing to pocket calculators to minicomputers to supercomputers to personal computers, the computational tools have changed but from ODIN to AVID to IPAD to DOSS to ISE to AEE to SBA to IM&S the multidisciplinary integrated environment has much to be accomplished. There is a very rich Langley history ranging from proud moments like contributing to the President’s State of the Union message to amusing and sometimes misunderstood amusing moments like bailing researchers out of jail.
