Observing the Atmospheric Water Cycle from Space Dr. Eric J. Fetzer, Jet Propulsion Laboratory
In the past several years NASA has launched a series of satellites carrying sophisticated instruments to observe the climate system. Several of those satellites fly in close formation in the A-Train constellation, providing measurements with overlapping spatial coverage and time coincidence of a few minutes or less. These detailed observations are helping answer a number of questions about the atmospheric water cycle. This talk describes some of the challenges to interpreting this large and complex data sets, what we have learned about climate by studying these observations, and what we can expect to learn in the coming years.
