Designing Statistical Tests to Address Scientific Questions
Betsy Weatherhead, NOAA Earth System Research Laboratory

In this age of gigabytes and terrabytes of data, there are often many interesting questions we can ask of our data. Do we have the statistical tools to address these questions? How do we know if the approaches we are using with the data are appropriate? And, perhaps just as important, how do we interpret the results? This talk will review some of the principles for developing statistical tests with environmental data and interpretting the results. Special focus will be placed on significance testing and the propogation of uncertainty.
