Computational Damage/Failure Mechanics of Materials Subjected to Impact Loads
Romesh Batra, Virginia Tech

We will discuss physics and mechanics based mathematical models and the associated finite element software to characterize damage and failure mechanisms under impact loads in
    (a) fiber-reinforced laminated composites (AS4/PEEK),
    (b) particulate composites (tungsten/nickel-iron),
    (c) prenotched metallic plates,
    (d) a metallic plate with a through-the-thickness elliptic void at its centroid,
    (e) functionally graded heat-conducting thermo-elasto-visco-plastic plates, and
    (f) penetration of a metallic plate by a ceramic/metallic rod.
We will also discuss a multiscale approach to delineate adiabatic shear bands in particulate composites comprised of heat-conducting thermo-elasto-visco-plastic constituents.
