Learning from Accidents: Some Benefits for Researchers
C. Michael Holloway, NASA Langley Research Center

Very few people except accident investigators and lawyers read accidents reports. This is a shame. Researchers have much to gain from frequent and careful reading of accident reports. This talk will enumerate and explain four important benefits: (1) improved ability to separate myths from reality, (2) increased understanding of the consequences of unlikely events, (3) greater recognition of the limits of mathematical models, and (4) better perspective on potentially relevant research directions.

Bio: Michael Holloway is a senior research engineer at the NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia. In October, he will finish a two year research sabbatical as one of NASA Langley's Floyd Thompson Fellows. Much of his sabbatical was spent in residence at NIA. His primary professional research interest is accident and incident investigation and reporting for software intensive systems. His primary real interests include theology, education, constitutional law, U.S. history, baseball, volleyball, and roller coasters.
