Systems-of-Systems Innovation -
Brainstorming for the 21st Century Air Transportation System
Herm Rediess, NIA
Air transportation demand will exceed the system capacity within two decades. The current airspace system is not scaleable to meet future demand. Failure to provide necessary capacity would have a drastic negative impact on our economy and quality of life in the 21st Century. Innovative systems-of-systems concepts to increase capacity while assuring safety and minimizing the environmental impact should be investigated.
Herm Rediess will present several examples of innovative systems-of-systems concepts that could add substantial capacity to the airspace system by eliminating or reducing constraints to the current system. Critical technical and operational challenges for each concept will be discussed. The talk is in the spirit of brainstorming not engineering analysis. The intent is not to present these concepts as the solution, but rather to stimulate innovative thinking at the systems-of-systems level.
