NASA Workshop on Constellation Composite Structures Certification
The Workshop on Constellation Composite Structures Certification, sponsored by the NASA Langley Research Center, Cx Chief Engineer, and Cx Integrated, Loads, Structures & Mechanisms (ILS&M) System Integration Group (SIG), will be held on September 10 and 11, 2008 at NIA Headquarters, 100 Exploration Way, Hampton, VA.
Background Information:
NASA’s Constellation Program is developing the next system to replace the Space Shuttle for near-earth manned spaceflight and to explore the moon and Mars. This workshop is focused on structural certification issues in using composite materials for the Orion, Ares, Altair, and Lunar Surface systems. The ultimate goal is to develop common design requirements, guidelines, and standards for design of composite primary structures appropriate to Constellation’s launch vehicle, spacecraft and surface system applications; and enhance the existing process that verifies and validates that these requirements are met. There is a wide variance of understanding in the current state of the art of composite structures within NASA. Therefore, this workshop is hosting engineering speakers from NASA, FAA, DOD, industry and university groups to develop a common understanding of these issues amongst both the Constellation project representatives and invited engineering participants. In addition, parallel breakout sessions will be held to provide a series of recommendations aimed towards meeting NASA’s aforementioned ultimate goal.
