Dates: July 24-26, 2007
Location: Embassy Suites Hotel, 1700 Coliseum Dr, Hampton, VA 23666 (757) 827-8200
Description:
This workshop focuses on challenges and opportunities for community and passenger noise control due to revolutionary changes in aircraft design. Dramatic advances in light-weight structures, reduced-emissions propulsion, active flow control, and propulsion/airframe integration along with societal demands for enhanced mobility will drive the development of radically different aircraft. Acousticians must participate in the development of such concepts in order to minimize noise control challenges and to ensure the exploitation of all noise control opportunities.
The invited speakers cover a broad range of expertise and experience in aircraft design, propulsion research, fundamental acoustics, as well as aircraft noise control. A kickoff lecture by Dr. Dennis Bushnell, NASA Langley Senior Scientist, on “The Future of Aviation” will be followed by a session on revolutionary aircraft design. Other sessions will focus on interior noise challenges in future aircraft, quiet propulsion, quiet air/structure interaction, and total-aircraft noise prediction for arbitrary configurations. Opportunities for general discussion and one-on-one interactions are scattered throughout the workshop.
Primary sponsors are the Research and Technology Directorate at NASA’s Langley Research Center and NASA’s Subsonic Fixed Wing Research Project. Co-sponsors are the Council of European Aerospace Societies (CEAS), and the Environment Technology Panel of the Joint Planning and Development Office (JPDO), and the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA). Workshop content is coordinated with the National Academy of Engineering’s study, “Technology for a Quieter America.”
A tour of NASA Langley Research Center will be offered following the workshop on July 26th. Participation is limited to the first 40 signups. (Note: Any non-US citizen desiring to take the tour must complete the NASA Visitor Information Sheet (Word | PDF) and send it to Joe Posey at Joe.W.Posey@NASA.gov no later than June 11th.)
