Diskin Promoted to NIA Senior Research Fellow

Hampton, Va. — Dr. Boris Diskin has been promoted to Senior Research Fellow at the National Institute of Aerospace. He is the institute’s first full-time researcher on staff to earn this title. Dr. Diskin is an internationally recognized expert in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and multidisciplinary analysis and optimization (MDAO). He has made many significant contributions to several practical CFD codes that are widely used by NASA and other government agencies, industry and academia. His technical leadership and noteworthy contributions in the development of practical technologies applicable to unsteady turbulent flows have earned notable recognition since he joined NIA as one of the institute’s first researchers in 2003.
Since 2011, Diskin serves as Director of NIA’s Center for High Performance Aerospace Computing (HiPAC), where he works closely with researchers at NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC). HiPAC researches computational aerosciences with a mission to advance computational methods and technologies for aerospace applications and transition them from fundamental studies to practical tools.
In 2013, Dr. Diskin published a paper with NASA LaRC collaborator, Dr. Eric Nielsen, “Discrete Adjoint-Based Design for Unsteady Turbulent Flows on Dynamic Overset Unstructured Grids.” The paper was the first publication documenting high-fidelity design capabilities for the most general aerodynamic flows, including complex rotorcraft flows. The paper received the prestigious NASA LaRC H. J. E. Reid Award as The Best Publication of the Year 2013 and was recognized as historically significant for Vertical Flight Research at NASA Langley.
Diskin is an Associate Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) since 2014 and was named the AIAA Hampton Roads Section Engineer-of-the-Year in 2015. Since 2014, Diskin leads the AIAA discussion group on Solver Technology for Turbulent Flows. The group is widely recognized in the broad international computational aeronautics community for providing reference solutions for evaluation and verification of emerging solver technologies for turbulent flows.
Dr. Diskin holds a Ph.D. and a Master of Science degree from the Weizmann Institute of Science, Rehovot, Israel. He also earned a Master of Science and a Bachelor of Science degree from the Institute of Nuclear Power Engineering, Obninsk, Russia.
