The Rapid Prototyping Laboratory at the National Institute of Aerospace is a multi-use facility that enables the rapid manufacturing of a variety of prototype systems and components. The laboratory provides models of complex systems and wind tunnel models for use in NIA’s subsonic wind and water tunnel facilities. It is also used for graduate student education and real-world engineering and production.
The facility is host to a Fortus 250 MC 3D Production System. The Fortus 250 is a 3D printer capable of producing durable prototypes, manufacturing tools, and end-use parts. The machine features a 10 x 10 x 12 inch (254 X 254 X 305 mm) build envelope and three layer thicknesses: .007, .10 and .013 inches (.178, .254, and .330 mm). Stratasys Fused Deposition Modeling™ (FDM) technology is used to build parts from the bottom up with precisely deposited layers of modeling and support material. ABSplus P-430 production grade thermoplastic is used to produce prototypes. A CleanStation® SRS DT3 machine, that rapidly dissolves soluble material from fused deposition model (FDM) parts and prototypes is also available.
