Wall-modeled Large-Eddy Simulation of Turbulent Separated Flows

Low-fidelity Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS)-based methods have limited accuracy for complex fluid flows involving separation such as an aircraft wing at high angle of attack. Wall-modeled Large Eddy Simulation (WMLES) resolves the flow scales away from the wall, while modeling the region very near the wall. It is being applied to various benchmark CFD problems of interest to NASA and the aerospace industry to assess its predictive ability. Preliminary results are encouraging, although, further improvements are needed in the wall models before being applied to realistic applications of interest.
